ZEUS The Zero Emission Ultimate Ship

The keel-lying ceremony of ZEUS- Zero Emission Ultimate Ship was held few days ago in Fincantieri Shipyard in Italy. The Experimental Fuel Cell powered marine vessel, fitted with a hybrid engine ( 2x electric motors, 2x diesel machines) will be delivered in 2021.

Measuring about 25 meters in length, ZEUS will serve as a floating laboratory to investigate fuel cell behavior in natural settings. Fuel cells are electrochemical devices that convert the chemical energy of hydrogen directly into electricity with no thermal combustion.

ZEUS will be equipped with a 130 kW fuel cell system powered by about 50 kg of hydrogen contained in 8 metal hydride cylinders, using technologies already applied on board submarines, and a battery system which can guarantee a zero-emission navigation range of 8 hours at a speed of approximately 7.5 knots.

The research goal is to develop a new way of generating electricity and heat on board cruise ships. This will result in: greater passenger comfort, by reducing noise and vibrations from the power generating systems; increased energy conversion output by adopting power generating systems with no moving mechanical parts; higher ship safety by increasing the redundancy of existing systems; and smaller onboard diesel generating sets.

The company, that will deliver a fuel cell system with 144 kW of fuel cell power for ZEUS Project will be a Fuel cell and electric hybrid systems Proton Motor Power Systems, that has already received a further order from Fincantieri.

“This is excellent news, with Proton having been the world’s first fuel cell system provider that has powered a ferry in Hamburg for six years between 2009 and 2014 with a 50 kW fuel cell system, it is a great achievement to receive a follow up order from Fincantieri at the ship building stage,” said chief executive officer Faiz Nahab.
